     Head Start Scholarship Program

This scholarship is intended to be awarded annually by YOBC (based on the availability of funds in any given year) to up to two qualifying 5th through 10th grade students residing in Bucks County. This is a need-based scholarship that will provide a year of free tuition to participate in YOBC; and will provide a year of weekly private music instruction at YOBC’s expense (teacher and rate to be selected in consultation with the student and YOBC). We are looking to award this scholarship to a student with demonstrated potential in classical musical performance that cannot afford to engage a private music teacher. As with all YOBC programs, this scholarship program seeks to enhance and support the student’s experience at his/her school music program.

Qualification of Candidates for the YOBC Head Start Scholarship

1)    Open to all 5th- 10th grade students (at the time of award) residing in Bucks County and participating in their school’s performance music program who are currently playing an instrument that would qualify for acceptance into one of YOBC’s ensembles.

2)    Student must obtain permission to apply from a parent or guardian. The parent/guardian must agree, if the child is initially selected, to provide YOBC’s Chairman with a confidential copy of the family’s prior-year Federal Tax return to demonstrate financial need. The parent/guardian must also provide a letter stating why they believe that their child would benefit from this scholarship and stating their commitment to help the student comply with the requirements of the scholarship.

3)    Student must obtain at least one letter of recommendation from their school’s Music Director or, should the school not have a music program, from a music educator with specific knowledge of the student’s music performance skills. He or she must also write a short essay explaining their motivation for applying for the scholarship and their goals should they be selected.

4)   YOBC reserves the right not to make an award should the pool of candidates not meet the criteria as determined solely by YOBC.

5)   YOBC reserves the right to withdraw a scholarship should the student fail to: practice their music sufficiently; attend the weekly lessons; participate in their school’s music ensemble (as available); and attend practice and performance at YOBC. YOBC will ask the music instructor and school Music Director to periodically report on the student’s progress to YOBC. The student must also agree to abide by YOBC’s Policies as outlined in our Student Handbook (available on the web site).

Selection Criteria for Candidates for the YOBC Head Start Scholarship

1)   The current award cycle will involve soliciting applicants through May 25, 2008. YOBC will evaluate applicants and make up to 2 awards by July 1, 2008. Private instruction would commence in August 2008 and be made available for the following 52-weeks. Tuition for the Fall 2008 – Spring 2009 season of YOBC will be provided.

2)   YOBC will establish a 5-person Selection Committee (SC). It will include the Chairman of YOBC, who will appoint the remaining 4 members.

3)   Applications will include the following: detailed information on the student (age, instrument, years of play, musical experience, etc.); letter(s) of recommendation from Music Director/professionals; letter from the parent/guardian.

4)   The SC will review the submitted material and meet once to decide which (if any) applicants should be interviewed. The Selection Criteria will involve:

a.        Strength of the applicant (based on our assessment of benefit from the scholarship’s assets);

b.       Written recommendations provided by the parent/guardian and the music professionals; &

c.        Fit within one or more of YOBC’s ensembles.

5)   The SC will develop a short-list of applicants that it would like to interview. At a second meeting of the SC, candidates and their parent/guardian will be interviewed. The applicant will also perform a short instrumental audition (requirements will be provided prior to scheduling the interview). The SC will make a final decision on award of 0, 1, or 2 scholarships immediately following completion of the interviews/auditions.

6)   The Chairman of YOBC will receive updates on the student’s progress from the private instructor, the school Music Director, and YOBC’s ensemble director(s). Any disciplinary action required, up to and including suspension of the scholarship, will be made by the Chairman in consultation with YOBC’s Board of Directors.
