Eligibility Membership in the YOBC is open to young musicians in elementary grades through high school. There are presently 285 students participating in one or more of our 17 ensembles. Pennsylvania residency is not a requirement.
Requirements Members must participate in their school instrumental music programs, if available, and take private music lessons. Please see our Handbook for details.
Tuition Tuition for the 2016-17 season is $665 and is nonrefundable. Tuition for the upcoming season is set by the Board of Directors at their March meeting. Scholarships for membership and private music lessons are available and awarded on the basis of need.
Parent Participation Without parent participation our organization would not be able to exist. Therefore we require that a parent volunteer form be filled out and submitted with the tuition fee before a child will be accepted into YOBC. We expect a commitment of approximately 6-10 hours a year.
Attendance Policy Regular attendance is of the utmost importance for fostering the kind of atmosphere needed to develop a musical ensemble. Please do not consider registering your child if you know his or her participation in other activities will come in serious conflict with our rehearsal schedule. For details on our attendance policy please see our Handbook.
Auditions All  new members must audition prior to placement. Entry is based solely on proficiency, not age. Internal placement auditions are scheduled at the recommendation of the director of a member's present ensemble for winds. String students are placed by conductdor recommendation. Changes to ensemble assignments will not be made during the school year.
Rehearsals Large ensembles rehearse weekly on Sunday afternoons during the months of September-November and January-April at the Bucks County Community College, Newtown Campus. Most chamber groups rehearse weekly; string sectionals occur on a rotating basis for some ensembles. For details as to exact times please see the webpage of the individual ensembles.
Concerts Each ensemble performs in the annual fall concert in November and spring concert in April. A Pops Concert featuring our Advanced Division Fanfare Winds and Symphony Orchestra is held in May. An annual chamber recital takes place in February/March. Other performance opportunities include field trips, extra concerts either with the entire ensemble or a chamber group, and our international tours which take place every two years (more information under "About YOBC"). We also offer sectionals, master classes, and projects with professional orchestras in Bucks County and the surrounding area.
